Lionel Messi’s injury-affected year could count against him in the Ballon d’Or voting, according to the Barcelona attacker’s teammate Xavi Hernandez.

While Messi has taken the last four Ballon d’Or prizes by large margins, this year’s voting could be closer. Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery is the favourite after winning the Champions League last season, although France’s recent struggles could have a detrimental effect, while Cristiano Ronaldo is making a late burst with a run of goals for Real Madrid and Portugal.

Xavi — who is himself on this year’s 23-man longlist and an outsider to appear on the five-man shortlist to be announced in early December —  told Sport that there was no doubt Messi remained the world’s best player.

However, he accepted that the Argentina international — currently sidelined with his fifth injury in six months — had not had the best of years.

“[Messi] has already won four in a row,” Xavi said. “Maybe those who vote will think about that. Maybe he deserves another. If we look at who is the best player in the world, it is Messi, no doubt. Now, if we talk about the best player in 2013, then I will admit there is some debate. Winning four in a row might damage him when it comes to the voting.”

Both sides had chances to win the game in an entertaining end to the encounter, but ultimately had to settle for a draw.

Ref won match for Nigeria — Bishaw

Posted: November 17, 2013 in Sport

Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw

Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw has blamed the referee for his country’s loss to Nigeria in the Brazil 2014 qualifying match.

He said that even though the Eagles played well the attitude of the referee changed the course of the match.

Ethiopia defender Aynalem Hailu handled the ball in the goal area as he tried to control the ball thus gifting Nigeria a chance to take the lead through a coolly taken penalty by Victor Moses in the first half.

He said, “I respect Keshi; he has done a good job organising this team. But the ref cheated us. We had two penalties denied us. And then he awarded one wrong one to Nigeria.

“That penalty to Nigeria affected the tide.”

Keshi said it was wrong for the Ethiopian coach to suggest as such.

“That’s his opinion. If it was the referee that made them lose in Calabar what about the one in Addis Ababa? We beat them there also. I don’t think he has spoken wisely.”

Bishaw believes the presence of  South Africa-based striker  Getaneh Kebede, who missed the first leg at Addis Ababa National Stadium, will propel his team to victory

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is still ruing selling Robin Van Persie to rivals manchester united.

Van Persie played a pivotal when both sides met, scoring the solitary goal that powered United to a 1-0 defeat of Arsenal on Sunday.

The French tactician added that he will never sell any other player to Manchester United, not the least when he is still managing Arsenal.
“It was a special circumstance,” Wenger said about the transfer. “I will not act for Arsenal for the next 100 years but I do not think it will happen again in my time,”
