Ordinarily, the man, being the head of the family, is expected to provide accommodation and other basic needs for his wife and children. But these days there are wealthy women who build houses on their own. Saturday PUNCH asked people if it was proper for men to live in houses built by their wives, expecially without their consent.

It is not proper

John Adeshina

No, it is not proper for a man to live in a house built by his wife without his consent. The husband and the wife are one and that alone means any decision that concerns the home is to be taken by the man and his wife. In this case, if she builds it without the husband’s consent, then I will say a big no to that. But if it is with the husband’s consent, then I think that is not bad. But for me, I will not agree to live in that house because for a woman to do that, it means she has no regard for the husband and she can even do more harm to him. So, I don’t agree with this.

Men generally are the jealous type

Bunmi Quadri

Normally, the husband and wife are meant to do things together because they are one. If this is not respected, they are bound to have issues between them. But as regards the question, it is not right for a man to live in a house built by his wife without his consent because it shows there is no love. If this happens, it can lead to divorce, because we all know that men generally are the jealous type. For me, my husband will know before I build any house.

It doesn’t sound well

Nosiru Lateef

We are generally bound by our culture. A Yoruba proverb says that a man who lives in a house built by an in-law is actually living in a bin house. To me, it doesn’t sound well but because our culture has been mixed, things like this are bound to happen. If the man knows, she can go ahead but if he doesn’t know, then I don’t agree. To me, there should be sincerity and if the sincerity is violated, then it is wrong for her to build, not to even talk of living there, I will not stay there. A woman should normally tell her husband everything she does.

She has no right to do that

Deborah Olanrewaju

The woman has no right to build a house without telling the husband because the man is the head of the home. A man should not live in that house because it is right for the wife to make known all her intentions to the man. For me, I can’t build a house without my husband’s consent.

I can’t live in house built by my wife without my contribution

Ayilara tunde

There should be a touch of sincerity in every husband and wife relationship. If she does that without my consent, then I will know she is up to something. I can’t even live in a house built by my wife without my consent. In short, I can’t live there because if she is sincere, she would let me know.

The woman should not hide anything from her husband

Omolola Ajibise

No, it means there is no love because I see no reason why the woman should hide things from her husband. To me, that is not right and it also means there is no trust. A man should not live in a house built by his wife without his consent. I can’t build a house without my husband’s consent, it is not proper at all.

The man should be responsible

Babalola Saka

In my opinion, I don’t think I can do that because the man should be capable enough to take up the responsibilities of his wife and kids. I should be responsible, not my wife. Not that I won’t be happy for her, but I can’t live there because as time goes on, there will be problem.

Men can never tolerate that

Victoria Osigwe

It is not right. The husband must know because if it happens, the man will be ridiculed by people outside. Men can never tolerate it because of their ego. It can even lead to divorce. So for me, my husband and I must agree before I build anything.

It is not acceptable

Adebisi Muftaudeen

It is not acceptable for a man to live in a house built by his wife without his consent, because it will be difficult for the man. The man, should do this not the other way round.

It is not acceptable in yoruba land

Funke Lawrence

In Yoruba land, this is not acceptable because the man is the head of the family and he should be the one in charge. In my own opinion, if the woman seeks the approval of the man to build a house and he agrees; then there is no problem with that. But if he doesn’t know, then I will say this will lead to disagreement and there will be no trust at all. My husband must know before I do anything.
