The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said on today, Thursday that the electoral body was not responsible for the arrest of some observers during the November 16 governorship election in Anambra.
Jega, who was represented by Prof. Mohammed Kuna, stated this at a lecture entitled: “The Road to 2015 Elections; Prospect and Challenges” in London.
It would be recalled that some observers, including former FCT Minister Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, were detained during the elections which INEC later declared inconclusive.
“I don’t know under what basis Mallam Nasir el-Rufai went to Anambra State, and the commission has no hand in it.
“There are procedures for accrediting observers; they are usually briefed and trained ahead of the exercise.
“And after the elections, they submit their report,” Jega said while answering questions from participants.
He attributed challenges to free and fair elections to include the attitude of some political elite.
“Politicians are not election observers, if the parties involved refuse to abide by the law that will pose a problem,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the INEC boss as saying at the forum.
Jega, who expressed concern over irregularities in the election, said the commission had launched an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the problem.
“We have summoned our officials; we want to have a comprehensive understanding of what took place.
“We had adequate logistic in place, deployment of electoral materials were done in time, so what happened?”
According to Jega, a better understanding of the challenges in the Anambra election will guide the commission in 2015.

President Goodluck Jonathan

The fight against corruption has assumed a new dimension in Ghana as President John Mahama has sacked the Deputy Minister of Communications, Victoria Hammah,  for allegedly making a statement that suggested that she could be corrupt. Although Hammah had not carried out the intention credited to her in the said tape, she was fired nonetheless. In the tape circulating online, she appears to have said, “If you have money, then you can control people.”

On Thursday, a taped conversation that Hammah had with someone, in which she allegedly said she would not leave politics until she had made $1m, leaked. By Friday, she was sacked by the government.

This is coming at a time that Nigerians are impatiently awaiting a decisive step by President Goodluck Jonathan over the role of the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, in the purchase of two armoured vehicles at a mind-boggling cost of about N255m.

Moscow, Russia – Protesting against “Kremlin’s crackdown on political rights,” Russian performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky stripped naked and nailed his testicles to a Red Square cobblestone.

November 10 is Police Day holiday in Russia.
Pavlensky, the 29-year-old Saint Petersburg-based artist states he was trying to draw public attention to the fact that Russia is developing into a “police state”.
This incident on Moscow’s Red Square is not the first time Pavlensky has resorted to such dramatic methods. In 2011, he stitched his lips together to protest against jailing members of the Pussy Riot punk band who staged an anti-Kremlin performance inside Moscow’s main cathedral. In May 2013, he was arrested after wrapping his naked body in barbed wire outside a Saint Petersburg government building.

THE leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Imo state has accused the governor of the state, Chief Rochas Okorocha of borrowing whopping N62 billion from the Zenith Bank in two and half years for execution of unnecessary sub-standard projects in the state.
Briefing journalists yesterday in Owerri, the chairman of the party in Imo State, Chief Eze Duruiheoma, (SAN) regretted such borrowing.

“The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been shouting over mortgaging the state in the past two years and half years. First was in 2011, for no reason Governor Okorocha unilaterally without recourse to the House of Assembly collected the sum of forty seven billion (N47 b) from Zenith Bank.
“While the dust was yet to settle, he recently arm-twisted the L.G.A Sole Administrators, the Directors of Administration and General Services and Treasurers of Local Government Areas into signing another fifteen billion Naira (N15 b) loan from the same bank still for no useful purpose to Imo people.”
Meanwhile, an official of government who pleaded anonymity told The Guardian that the PDP was bent of destroying the good works of Okorocha, accusing the party of staying on to power for several years without much.
